In April 2015, legislators declared medical marijuana legal when if a physician has prescribed the drug. Called Haleigh's Hope Act, it was enacted to allow patients whose only source of life-saving treatment may be medical marijuana. However, the laws are still very restrictive. You can only possess a certain amount until the law decides that you are in violation.
The penalties for medical marijuana offenses may include:
- 1 ounce or less for personal use:
- 1 year incarceration
- Up to $1, 000 fine
- Driver's license suspension for 6 months
- More than 1 ounce
- Incarceration between 1 to 10 years
- Up to $100, 000 in fines
- Driver's license suspension for 6 months
